TV's Audience is Increasingly Getting Older

TV's audience is increasingly an older one, with the median age of a broadcast or cable TV viewer during the 2013-14 TV season at 44.4 years old, up six percent from four years earlier, according to The Washington Post.

The Post cites new data from Moffett Nathanson Research. Audiences for the major broadcast network shows are even older and graying faster, with a median age of 53.9 years old, up seven percent from four years ago.

The analysis said that a few factors are responsible, including younger people spending more time online, watching programs on outlets like Netflix, and when they do watch TV shows, controlling when and how they watch them.

That's also shown in the decline of live TV viewing, which is down 13 percent for all ages, except for those 55 and older.
