DC Radio: NHL Capitals Add iHM's 104.7 FM To Broadcasts

Washington Capitals game broadcasts will begin appearing on translator W284CQ 104.7 FM this week, returning the team to the FM dial just past the season’s midway point.

After its previous partnership with sports-talker WJFK 106.7 FM The Fan was not renewed this fall, the team announced an unusual plan in which games would appear on WFED 1500 AM — unless they conflicted with other programming, in which case they would be carried exclusively through online streams. That led to some complaints, both to the team and to members of the media, about the difficulty of listening to at least some games on terrestrial radio.

According to The Washington Post, the team thus crafted a deal with iHeartRadio’s 104.7, a 100-watt FM station that hasn’t been programmed yet, and has been simulcasting WIHT HOT 99.5 FM’s top 40 programming. The new deal begins immediately.

“We’re very excited to have the Capitals on our airwaves,” said Michael Preacher, Region President of iHeartMedia Washington, D.C. and Government Initiatives. “Our listeners will be thrilled to hear hockey’s hottest team on 104.7 FM.”

”It’s a great opportunity for us to not only expands our coverage area in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia, but also to partner with one of our region’s most respected media companies. I’m very happy for our fans that our game day coverage will be on the FM dial in Washington on 104.7 FM,” said John Walton, Senior Director of Broadcasting, Washington Capitals, Monumental Sports and Entertainment.
